WHY DO YOU WAiT FOR CRiSiS TO CHANGE?

Why do you wait for crisis in order to fix something? (Yes, I’m looking directly at you.)

You don’t wait til your lights are cut off to pay the bill or til your engine is on fire to get an oil change. So, why, when it comes to communication—one of the most essential skills we use every damn day—you wait for it to blow up before you try to fix it?

Make it make sense.

A breakup.

A team implosion.

A firing.

A ghosting.

A screaming match at Thanksgiving.

Then you’re out here Googling “how to #communicate better.”

We’ll, clinically, it makes sense—we are wired for reactions, not prevention. Behavioral psych calls this “delay discounting”: undervaluing small, proactive efforts in favor of waiting for a radically dramatic consequence to motivate us.

But the thing is, communication isn’t just about crisis control. It’s about tapping into oneself having the awareness and vocabulary to identify thoughts and feelings for clarity, connection, and confidence.

You don’t need to be in the middle of a meltdown to work on being understood.

In fact, that’s the worst time to start.
